After the most recent event at Sebring, we have a wide-open championship battle. Klaus Kivek�s, Hugo Luis and Greger Huttu are all within 18 points of each other when you take into consideration the two “drop” races everyone is allowed. What’s more, fourth-placed Jesse Nieminen is only 39 points out of the lead. Half-way through the season it is anybody?s guess who will bring home the title. Vettel eases to European GP victory
Sebastian Vettel resumed his domination of the 2011 Formula 1 season after his Montreal blip, by winning the European Grand Prix in Valencia with ease. The world champion broke his rivals' challenge with an early charge that saw him establish a three-second lead within a few laps and then nurse a similar advantage for the rest of the afternoon, before a push for fastest lap in the final stint took his winning margin up to 10.8 seconds. Fernando Alonso finished a very encouraging second for Ferrari in front of his home crowd.

Horner questions rule changes timing
Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner says he does not understand why the FIA chose to make a move on the blown diffuser regulations mid-season, rather than waiting until the end of the year. With Horner claiming it is impossible to predict what impact this weekend's change to engine-mapping rules and the looming ban on off-throttle use of blown diffusers from Silverstone will have, he has expressed frustration at the timing. "It is slightly confusing with the technical directive that it was not addressed at the end of the year going into next year," he said.

McLaren ?hopeful? over ECU tweaks
McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh is "hopeful" the new regulations introduced from this weekend's European GP will boost his team's chances this season. The FIA, Formula 1's ruling body, announced this week that from the Valencia race, teams will not be allowed to change engine maps between qualifying and the race, a move aimed at stopping outfits from running an extreme engine map for the grid-deciding session. F1 considers move to V6 turbos
The Formula 1 Commission is set to be asked to consider switching the sport's future engines to 1.6-litre V6 turbos in a bid to end the ongoing stalemate about future regulations, AUTOSPORT has learned. Ahead of a crunch meeting in London today to discuss engine regulations for 2013, amid disagreement between manufacturers over plans to move to 1.6-litre four-cylinder engines, it is understood that a final push has been made by the car makers to find a solution that is acceptable to all the sport's stakeholders. Sources have revealed that those behind-the-scenes discussions between the engine manufacturers have resulted in a plan for the four-cylinder plans to be dropped and instead 1.6-litre V6s to come into force from 2014 - one year later than the current change in regulations is planned to come into force

Dario Franchitti moved into an equal points lead with Will Power by taking victory on the IndyCar Series' return to Milwaukee Mile, although the Australian was able to salvage fourth place having started only 17th. British Formula 3 championship leader Felipe Nasr set the fastest time in pre-race testing ahead of this weekend's races on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit. The Brazilian was the only driver to lap below 1m18s in the morning's dry opening session. Ogier clinches Acropolis victory
Sebastien Ogier won a final-day battle with Citroen team-mate Sebastien Loeb to take an Acropolis Rally victory which underlined that he is still a threat for this year's title. Winterbottom denies Whincup pole
Ford Performance Racing's Mark Winterbottom beat championship leader Jamie Whincup (Triple Eight Holden) to pole position for the first of this weekend's races at Darwin's Hidden Valley Raceway. The top 10 shoot-out qualifying system is back in use this weekend, and after going quickest in the opening part of qualifying, Winterbottom was the last man out in the pole session - going on to edge out Whincup by just 0.01 seconds. Stone Brothers' Shane van Gisbergen registered his best qualifying result of 2011 so far in third, sharing row two with Dick Johnson Ford driver Steven Johnson.

Loeb leads Acropolis Rally
Defending world rally champion Sebastien Loeb grabbed the overall lead in the Acropolis Rally in the final stage Saturday. Loeb topped Citroen teammate Sebastien Ogier by 2.2 seconds with one day left. Norways Petter Solberg, the overall leader after the rallys first day Friday, dropped 20.9 seconds behind Loeb in third.

The FIA has officially confirmed the Bahrain Grand Prix will not take place this year, leaving the calendar with 19 races. Following a fax vote this week, the ruling body's World Motor Sport Council has reinstated the Indian Grand Prix back to its original October 30 date. Toyota testing new LMP1 car
Toyota has been testing an all-new LMP1 car since last year, and could return to the Le Mans 24 Hours as early as 2012, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine. The Japanese manufacturer commissioned the machine, which is known to incorporate hybrid technology and comply with the 2011 prototype technical regulations, from racing car constructor Dome. When asked about the possibility of Toyota returning to top-line prototype racing, Vincent Beaumesnil, sporting manager of Le Mans organiser the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, said: "We are in contact with many manufacturers who are interested in LMP1, not just Toyota." Toyota last competed at Le Mans as a full manufacturer in 1999, but supplied engines to the Rebellion LMP1 squad on a customer basis this year.

STR delighted with double points finish
Toro Rosso secured a double points finish for the first time in 2011 as a bold pre-race strategy switch paid dividends for them at the Canadian Grand Prix. Jaime Alguersuari, who would have started 18th on the grid, was withdrawn to the pits before the race started to switch his car to a wet set-up. Panis retires from Le Mans racing
Olivier Panis has called time on his Le Mans racing career, stating that his fifth position in last weekend's event will be the last result he will post at La Sarthe. The 44-year-old former Monaco Grand Prix winner has competed in four Le Mans for ORECA since 2008, and this year shared the team's privately-entered year-old Peugeot 908 HDi FAP with Nicolas Lapierre and Loic Duval. But the Frenchman is quitting Le Mans because he thinks his chances of securing a drive that will put him in contention to win the race are low
